Champaswaralu Earrings Guide

Champaswaralu (also written as Champaswaram or Champs) are a uniquely South Indian jewellery piece — a decorative ear chain that connects a large earring to a hair pin, distributing the weight of heavy earrings across both the earlobe and the hair. They are one of the most distinctive features of traditional Telugu and Kannada bridal jewellery.

Why Do Champaswaralu Exist?

Traditional South Indian bridal earrings — particularly Chandbali and large Jhumka styles — can be quite heavy, putting significant strain on the earlobes. Champaswaralu solve this elegantly: a decorative chain connects the bottom of the earring to a decorative pin (called a matilu or champaswaralu pin) that clips into the hair above the ear, effectively sharing the weight between the ear and the hair.

Over time, Champaswaralu evolved from a purely functional accessory into a prized jewellery item in their own right — elaborately decorated with stones, pearls and gold-finish work.

Types of Champaswaralu Designs at Gehna For You

Classic Champaswaralu — A simple gold-finish chain connecting a large Chandbali earring to a decorative pin. Traditional and elegant.

Stone-Set Champaswaralu — The chain features Kundan, Nakshi or CZ stone settings along its length, adding sparkle and decorative interest.

Pearl Champaswaralu — Delicate pearl beads strung along the ear chain, popular for brides who prefer a softer, more feminine look.

Peacock Champaswaralu — Featuring small peacock motifs along the chain, a beloved traditional South Indian design.

How to Wear Champaswaralu

1. Put on your earrings first and secure them properly.
2. Take the chain (Champaswaralu) and connect one end to the bottom loop of the earring.
3. Arrange your hair and secure the pin end into your hair just above and slightly behind the ear — the chain should have a gentle, graceful drape.
4. Adjust the length of the chain so it hangs naturally without pulling the earring down.

How to Style Champaswaralu

Telugu Wedding: Champaswaralu are an essential part of the traditional Telugu bridal jewellery set, worn alongside a Jadau or Nakshi necklace and Guttapusalu.

Half Saree Function: Champaswaralu look beautiful at Langa Voni (half saree) ceremonies, especially with large Nakshi Chandbali earrings.

Navratri: A decorative pair of Champaswaralu with a Nakshi Jhumka earring adds an authentic traditional touch to Navratri ethnic wear.
