Guttapusalu Necklace Guide
Share
The Guttapusalu necklace is one of the most iconic pieces of South Indian jewellery — a traditional Andhra Pradesh and Telangana bridal necklace recognised by its distinctive cluster of gold beads (guttapusalu) arranged in cascading rows with a central Laxmi or floral pendant.
What Does Guttapusalu Mean?
In Telugu, "Gutta" means cluster or bunch, and "Pusalu" means beads or flowers. Together, Guttapusalu describes a necklace made of clusters of gold beads arranged in a way that resembles a bunch of flowers or grapes hanging together.
History and Significance of the Guttapusalu
The Guttapusalu is believed to have originated in the temples of Andhra Pradesh, where it was first used as temple jewellery for deity adornment. Over centuries it became an essential bridal jewellery piece for Telugu and Kannada brides, symbolising prosperity, fertility and divine blessings.
In traditional Telugu weddings, the Guttapusalu is often gifted as part of the bride's trousseau (pellikuthuru) by the bride's family or in-laws, and is worn throughout the wedding ceremonies.
Types of Guttapusalu Necklaces
Short Guttapusalu — sits at the collarbone, typically 3-4 rows of bead clusters with a Laxmi pendant. Ideal for daily ethnic wear and smaller functions.
Long Guttapusalu (Rani Haar) — a full-length opera necklace with multiple rows of bead clusters and an elaborate pendant. The quintessential Telugu bridal necklace.
Jadau Guttapusalu — a more elaborate version combining traditional Guttapusalu bead clusters with Jadau Kundan stone settings in the pendant and connecting elements.
2-in-1 Guttapusalu — a convertible necklace that can be worn as both a short and long necklace, popular for its versatility.
How to Wear a Guttapusalu
Telugu Wedding Ceremonies: A long Guttapusalu worn over a Kanjivaram silk saree with gold Vanki (armlet) and Vadannam (waist chain) is the complete traditional Telugu bridal look.
Navratri and Festivals: A short Guttapusalu with a bright cotton or silk saree in festive colours.
Engagement Functions: A Jadau Guttapusalu with matching Jadau earrings and Maangtika for the engagement ceremony.
