Maangtika: Types & Styling Guide

A Maangtika (also spelled Maang Tikka or Mang Tikka) is one of the most iconic pieces of Indian bridal jewellery — a decorative hair accessory worn along the centre parting (maang) of the hair. It consists of a pendant or medallion suspended from a chain or cord, with a hook or pin that attaches to the hair at the parting.

Types of Maangtika

Classic Maang Tikka — A single pendant suspended from a thin chain, attached at the hair parting. The pendant can be round, teardrop, square or flower-shaped. The most versatile and widely worn style.

Matha Patti — A longer, more elaborate headpiece that extends from the hair parting down to the forehead, often with multiple pendants or a chain that wraps around the head. A classic South Indian and Rajasthani bridal accessory.

Passa (Side Tikka) — A decorative hair accessory worn on the side of the head, clipped into the hair near the temple. Popular in North Indian bridal looks.

Jhumar — A large, fan-shaped hair ornament worn on the side of the head, featuring multiple pendants. A traditional Punjabi bridal accessory.

Mini Tikka — A smaller, more delicate version of the classic Maangtika, ideal for non-bridal festive occasions and casual ethnic wear.

How to Choose a Maangtika for Your Face Shape

Round Face: Choose a longer, elongated pendant Maangtika that draws the eye downward, creating the illusion of a longer face.

Oval Face: Almost any style works — you're lucky! Round pendants and teardrop shapes both look stunning.

Heart-Shaped Face: Opt for a broader Matha Patti or a wider pendant that adds width to the lower part of the face.

Long Face: Choose a wider, rounder pendant that adds width at the centre of the face.

How to Match Your Maangtika to Your Jewellery Set

The Maangtika should ideally match or complement your necklace and earrings in terms of style and finish. Some guidelines:

Jadau Kundan necklace → Jadau Kundan Maangtika with matching stones
Victorian necklace → Victorian Moissanite Maangtika
Nakshi necklace → Nakshi Laxmi or Peacock Maangtika
Diamond Look necklace → CZ stone Maangtika

If wearing a statement Matha Patti, keep earrings smaller so the headpiece remains the focal point.

How to Wear a Maangtika

1. Part your hair cleanly down the centre.
2. Attach the hook or pin to the hair at the parting, approximately 2-3 cm back from the hairline.
3. Let the pendant rest on the forehead at the centre.
4. Secure with a bobby pin hidden in the hair if needed for extra hold.
