Vadannam & Waist Chain Guide

The Vadannam (also written as Vaddanam or Oddiyanam) is a traditional South Indian jewellery piece worn around the waist or hips. It is one of the sixteen traditional jewellery items (Solah Shringar) worn by South Indian brides and holds deep cultural and religious significance.
What Is a Vadannam?
A Vadannam is a decorative waist belt or hip chain crafted in gold or gold-finish metal, typically featuring intricate craftsmanship with Laxmi motifs, peacock designs, floral patterns or stone settings. It sits around the natural waist or slightly below the hip, secured with a hook-and-eye or adjustable clasp.
Types of Vadannam
Traditional Vadannam (Broad Belt) — A broad, ornate waist belt 2-4 inches wide, featuring elaborate Nakshi work, Jadau stone settings or meenakari enamel. The most formal and bridal style.
Chain Vadannam (Hip Chain) — A lighter, chain-style waist belt made of interlocking gold-finish links, sometimes with small pendant drops. More modern and suitable for festive occasions and receptions.
Nakshi Vadannam — A matte gold-finish Vadannam with hand-embossed Nakshi patterns featuring Laxmi devi, peacocks and floral motifs. The classic South Indian bridal style.
Jadau Vadannam — A Vadannam featuring Jadau Kundan stone settings, popular for Hyderabadi and Rajasthani weddings.
Cultural Significance of the Vadannam
In South Indian tradition, particularly in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada weddings, the Vadannam is considered one of the most important bridal ornaments. It is believed to accentuate a woman's feminine silhouette and is associated with fertility and marital prosperity.
In many Telugu families, the Vadannam is gifted to the bride by her in-laws as part of the wedding jewellery, and its quality is considered a measure of the family's status and affection for the bride.
How to Wear a Vadannam
1. With a saree: Drape the Vadannam over the saree at the natural waist, ensuring the central pendant or the most decorative part sits at the centre-front.
2. With a lehenga: Position the Vadannam at the hip, resting just below the waistband of the lehenga skirt.
3. With a half saree: The Vadannam goes over the pavadai (long skirt) at the waist, traditionally styled over the pleats.
